The blazer is the piece where second-hand offers the biggest gap in quality for the same price: the construction of a jacket - interfacing, lining, buttonholes - is what is expensive new and what keeps best over time. The assessment is therefore done on the inside. The lining under the arms gives way before the outer fabric, and it can be replaced at modest cost, unlike fabric made shiny by an iron that was too hot, which is permanent. Then check the shoulder seams, how well the collar holds, and make sure the buttons are original and all match: on this kind of piece they are often specific to one model. On wool, look for moth damage in the inside seams rather than on the surface.
