A blazer is the piece of a man's wardrobe where the gap between entry-level new and good-quality second-hand is greatest: the interfacing, buttonholes and lining of a well-built jacket cannot be found at a low price new. So that is where to look, and the assessment is done on the inside rather than the outside. The lining under the arms gives way before the fabric - and it can be replaced, unlike fabric made shiny by an iron that was too hot, which is permanent. Then check the shoulder seams, how well the collar holds, and make sure the buttons are original and all match: an odd button on a jacket shows immediately. Sizes are numbered the European way, a 50 being roughly an L.
