Second-hand women's vests and tops

Vests and tops are the pieces where elastane decides everything. It is the straps and the neckline that stretch, and the elastic thread holding them loses its spring over time without the fabric looking damaged: a piece can seem impeccable and no longer stay in place. That is the first check, and it is done by gently stretching the edge to see whether it springs back. Then check the armhole seams, often light on this kind of garment and so the first to give way. On a light-coloured fabric, check for any marks under the arms, usually permanent. And on fine knits, look for snags against the light, where they appear even though they do not show from the front.
