On a pre-owned T-shirt, two things decide the condition, and the fabric is not one of them. The neckline first: once stretched, it never recovers its shape, and that is what makes a piece look tired while the cotton is intact. The print next, when there is one: a screen print cracks and then peels, where embroidery survives many more washes. On fine knits and blends with elastane, you also need to check the fabric's spring - on a fitted cut, slack jersey completely changes how the piece hangs and cannot be recovered. Finally, look for pulled threads against the light: on a fine knit, they are invisible from the front. Sizing varies a lot, with several brands numbering from 0 to 4 rather than using letters.
