On a pre-owned pair of shorts, the critical point is the crotch: the fabric thins there through rubbing well before it gives way, and that is where you need to look against the light rather than at the visible areas. Then check the waistband, the belt loops and the fastening along its whole run. On light denim shorts, see-through pocket bags announce a hole to come, and on stretch denim the spring of the elastane is decisive - once lost, it does not come back. Lengths and sizing vary a great deal in this category, between high-waisted cuts and low-rise models that do not hang at all the same way for the same size: here the flat measurements are more reliable than the label.
