On a pre-owned pair of trousers, the wear areas are not the ones you instinctively inspect: the seat and the inner thighs, where the fabric goes shiny and then thins, and the bottom of the leg, frayed by rubbing against the shoe. A shiny area on the seat announces what comes next, even when the colour is intact. The most useful piece of information is still the hem: if it has already been altered, the spare fabric has been used up and the trousers can no longer be lengthened - something to check before buying, not after. Also check the waistband lining and the fastening. On fluid models, viscose or light blends, look for pulled threads against the light; on models with elastane, check that the fabric springs back when you stretch it.
