On a pre-owned pair of trousers, wear shows in places you do not instinctively look. The seat and the inner thighs first, where the fabric goes shiny and then thins: a shiny area announces what comes next, even when the colour looks intact. Then the bottom of the leg, often frayed by rubbing against the shoe. And the hem, which is the most useful piece of information of all: if it has already been altered, the spare fabric has been used up and the trousers can no longer be lengthened. Also check the waistband lining, which loses its shape when the garment has been worn too tight. On size, chinos and smart trousers generally follow European sizes, whereas models inspired by workwear measure in inches.
