On a pre-owned skirt, wear is concentrated on the waistband and the fastening, which are the stress points, and on the seat, where the fabric goes shiny first. A shiny area there indicates a garment that has been worn a lot even when the colour is intact. Then check the lining, which gives way before the outer fabric but can be replaced, and which makes the hem twist if it has shrunk differently. On a pleated skirt, an extra check is essential: do the pleats still hold? A pleat that has dropped after an unsuitable wash will not go back into place, and that is irreversible. As for length, brands' descriptions are not standardised - mini, midi and maxi cover very different realities - so the flat measurements are more reliable than the description.
