Lacoste's women's T-shirts use the brand's dense cotton, which sets them apart from mass-market basics: the knit stretches less and keeps its shape longer. Watch out for the size system, which is the house's recurring trap: numbers run from 2 to 7 rather than letters, a 38 being roughly a 2, a 40 a 3. Older pieces run larger for the same number. On a pre-owned T-shirt, two things decide the condition and neither is the fabric: the neckline, which never recovers its shape once stretched, and the print or embroidery - an embroidered crocodile survives many more washes than a screen-printed motif. Also look for pulled threads against the light on fine knits.
