Second-hand Champion

Champion is an American brand born from college sportswear, and it is the one we owe the sweatshirt as we know it to. Its appeal second-hand is straightforward: the brand's fleeces are thick, and the cuts of older pieces, wide and short with reinforced side panels, are exactly what people look for today. The embroidered C logo on the sleeve helps place a piece in time, as its design has changed over the decades. The sizing is wide and given in US sizes, often one size above the European equivalent. On a pre-owned piece, the ribbed edges - cuffs, hem, neckline - lose their spring before the fleece itself suffers, so that is the first thing to check. Then check for pilling at the elbows and under the arms, and the state of the flock prints, which crack where embroidery holds.
