Dickies is an American workwear brand, and that is the right angle for assessing it second-hand: its trousers and jackets are designed to be worn every day on a building site, with heavy canvas and reinforced seams. A well-worn piece can therefore still be perfectly sound, which is rarely the case elsewhere. The emblematic model, the straight-leg work trouser, has been made without notable change for decades. The sizing is roomy and measured in inches, W for the waist and L for the leg length. On a pre-owned piece, check the crotch and the seat, where the canvas goes shiny and then thins, the belt loops, the rivets and the pockets - that is where workwear gives way first. A cleanly cut hem is an alteration, not a flaw.
