The Fred Perry polo is a special case second-hand: the M12, with its twin tipping on the collar and cuffs, has been made for decades with the same construction, so an old piece and a recent one can be worn side by side without looking dated. The brand follows British sizes and cuts closer to the body than sports brands - that is the main difference to anticipate. What decides the condition is the tipping: a contrast stripe that has bled onto a light background, or that has stretched, gives away a bad wash and cannot be fixed. Then check the embroidery of the laurel wreath, then the ribbed collar, which loses its shape before the rest of the garment. The underarms, as on any polo, mark before the body of the knit.
