Levi's measures in inches: W for the waist, L for the leg length. The model number (501, 511, 505) defines the cut more reliably than the size. On a pre-owned dress, first check the back fastening, zip or buttons, which is the main stress point, then the waist seams. On fluid fabrics, look for pulled threads against the light, and on a lined piece make sure the lining has not shrunk differently from the outer fabric - that is what makes a hem twist.
