Quiksilver comes from Australian surfing, and that is the right angle for judging its pieces second-hand: what counts is how the fabrics stand up to salt, chlorine and sun, more than the style. The brand is recognisable by its wave-and-mountain logo, whose graphics have changed over the decades and make it possible to date a piece. The sizing is roomy, designed for movement, and given in US sizes. On a pre-owned piece, wear shows first on the prints: a screen print that cracks or whose edges lift is irreversible, unlike embroidery. On swim shorts, the waistband elastic and the drawcord give way before the fabric, and a slack elastic cannot be rescued; also look at the inner lining and any faded areas on the seat.
