Timberland comes from American work clothing and footwear, and second-hand it is judged on the material rather than the style: thick leathers, heavy canvas, warm linings. The brand's pieces are designed to be worn outdoors, so visible wear is not necessarily a flaw - it is the structure you need to assess. The sizing is roomy, designed for layering, and given in US sizes. On a pre-owned jacket, check the inside of the seams and the fastenings, often oversized and expensive to replace. On leather and nubuck, dryness can be nourished and rescued, whereas a deep crack is permanent: that is the distinction to make before buying. Finally, check the elastics at the cuffs and hem, which lose their spring before the fabric.
