The Tommy Hilfiger shirt is good territory for second-hand because it changes little: an Oxford or a checked shirt from the brand cannot be dated at a glance, and the cuts stay clean from one year to the next. Two precautions, however. The first is the line: Tommy Jeans is a separate world, with its own cuts, and second-hand mixes them. The second is the sizing, fairly generous and often given in US sizes, particularly on pieces from before 2010. On a pre-owned shirt, wear is concentrated in three friction areas: the point and fold of the collar, the edge of the cuffs, and the fabric around the top button. Fabric that has thinned in these places cannot be repaired. Finally, on a light-coloured shirt, check the colour under the arms, where marks are most often permanent.
