Nike sweatshirts are dated by their codes - an embroidered rather than printed Swoosh, whether or not the word 'Nike' sits next to the logo, the composition label - and that matters because the cuts have moved a lot: wide and short in the 1990s, much narrower today, for the same size. The fabric matters just as much: a cotton fleece and a technical sweatshirt have neither the same hold nor the same ageing, the latter holding on to odours more. On a pre-owned piece, the ribbed edges lose their spring before the fleece itself suffers - that is the first check. Then comes the print: a cracked screen-printed Swoosh is permanent. On technical models, check the heat-bonded seams at the shoulders, which come apart after many washes.
