The Nike T-shirt is easy to date, which is useful before buying pre-owned: an embroidered rather than printed Swoosh, whether or not the word 'Nike' sits next to the logo, and the composition label place the piece. What is at stake is the cut, which has moved a lot - models from the 1990s are wide and short, recent production much narrower, for the same size. The fabric matters just as much: a cotton T-shirt and a technical one have neither the same hold nor the same ageing, and the latter holds on to odours more. On a pre-owned piece, two things decide the condition: the neckline, which never recovers its shape once stretched, and the print - a screen-printed Swoosh that cracks or peels is irreversible, where embroidery lasts much longer.
