Ellesse gives European sizes: wide and short on older pieces, closer to the body on reissues. On a pre-owned sweatshirt or jumper, wear shows at the ribbed edges - cuffs, hem, neckline - which lose their spring before the knit itself suffers. Then check for pilling where it rubs (elbows, under the arms, waist) and, on fine knits, look for snags against the light rather than from the front.
